WHAM is an accessory of the POLARIS. The Uniden WHAM 900  
MHz analog wireless mic is designed to provide you with years of  
trouble-free service. Its rugged components and materials are easily  
capable of withstanding the harsh marine environment. As it has a JIS7  
waterproof housing to protect the electronics.

SCAN/MEM - Select Scan mode and setup Memory channels.  
Press this key to activate the Scan operation. Press and hold this  
key for 2 seconds to place a channel into Scan Memory or remove  
a channel from Scan Memory.

POWER/VOL - This is to control the wireless mic power and  
speaker volume.  
L/M - Change the channel number up/down. These buttons are used to  
adjust the volume for Hail mode and to move the cursor in Menu mode.  
MENU/HAIL - It is used to access the Menu. Press and hold the  
key for 2 seconds to activate the Hail feature.

DISTRESS - Send a signal of distress in case of emergency.  
WX/ALERT - Select Weather Channel and Weather Alert mode.  
Press this key to listen to active NOAA Weather Channels.  
Press and hold this key for 2 seconds to place the radio into the  
Weather Alert mode.

Getting Started  
Mounting the Drop-in Charger  
1.  
Mount the drop-in charger to either a bulk head or dash.

Plug one end of the AC adapter into a wall outlet, or the DC  
adapter into a cigarette lighter socket, and the other end into the  
drop-in charger.  
* Please turn the power Off on the WHAM before charging.

Installation  
Installing the Battery Pack

Use a coin or screw driver to loosen the  
screw on the cover.  
Unlock both sides of the battery  
compartment.  
Open the cover.

Connect the battery pack (BT-446)  
connector observing the correct  
polarity (black and red wires) to the  
jack inside the battery  
compartment. Do not exert any  
force on this connection. It could  
cause damage to the battery or  
handset.  
The plastic connector will fit  
together only one way. Once you  
are certain that you have made a  
good connection, then insert the  
battery pack into the battery  
compartment. Do not pinch the  
wires.

Put the alkaline battery tray inside,  
and install the 3 AAA batteries in  
the tray.

Installing the Beltclip

Place the beltclip on the mounting area  
on the back of the WHAM, making sure  
the hole in the clip lines up with the  
notch on the back of the WHAM.

hole and tighten.

Control Unit Connection and Installation

Connect the Control Unit cable and the Remote Connector.  
Choose the best location for the POLARIS and the Control Unit.  
Away from the vessels compass.  
Away from metal objects that might interfere or obstruct the  
signal.

Make sure the WHAM icon appears on the POLARISLCD.  
Note:  
Register the WHAM to the POLARIS (See page 12). Test the  
POLARIS and WHAM before mounting the POLARIS and

Operation  
Power On/Off  
Press and hold POWER/VOL for 2 seconds  
to turn the WHAM On. You can turn the  
WHAM Off by pressing and holding  
POWER/VOL for 2 seconds again.  
* If you are not able to turn the WHAM Off,  
press and hold POWER/VOL for more than  
15 seconds.  
When you turn the unit On, you will hear

Triple Watch  
Triple Watch monitors Channel 16, Channel 9, and the current Marine  
Channel or Weather Channel.  
To activate Triple Watch, press and hold 16/9/TRI for 2 seconds. TRI  
appears on the LCD, indicating Triple Watch mode is in effect. If a signal  
is received on either Channel 16 or Channel 9, the radio remains on that  
channel until the signal ends.

Note:  
While in Triple Watch mode, you can change the currently  
selected channel using the L/M keys.  
A momentary press of the 16/9/TRI button interrupts Triple  
Watch mode and remains on channel 16, or on channel 9 if  
you press 16/9/TRI once more. To return to the Triple Watch  
mode, simply press the button again.

Weather Channels  
To select Weather Channels 0-9, press  
WX/ALERT. The radio will go to the last  
selected Weather Channel. Press L or M  
to select a different Weather Channel.  
To exit from Weather Channel:  
G Press WX/ALERT. The radio returns  
to the previous Marine channel.

MEM (Entering channel numbers into Memory Scan)  
You can enter channels into Memory Scan for instant scanning at any  
time. When a channel is selected for Memory Scan, MEMappears on the  
LCD display.  
To enter a channel into Memory Scan,  
select the channel you want to store by  
pressing L/M on the WHAM, and then  
press and hold SCAN/MEM for 2 seconds.  
The channel is stored in Memory Scan and  
MEMappears on the LCD display.

Registering the WHAM to the POLARIS  
Note:  
When you use the WHAM in addition to the POLARIS wired  
mic, please set the BASE ID for the POLARIS the same as the  
WHAM. (Please refer to the Owners Manual for the POLARIS).

When the WHAM is turned On for

The number will be entered when  
the H/L/SELECT is pressed, and the blinking digit moves to the  
right. (You can select any number between 0000 and 9999.)

You can select the Hand set IDby pressing L or M, and then  
press H/L/SELECT to enter the number.

Turn the WHAM Off to confirm the data.

need to press and hold MENU/HAIL and turn the WHAM On.  
When you rewrite the ID, press and hold MENU/HAIL for  
2 seconds and turn the WHAM On to change the Base ID and  
Handset ID.  
* Please refer to the POLARISOwners Manual for menu  
operation. The key names may vary.

Hail  
To access the Hail mode, press and hold  
MENU/HAIL for more than 2 seconds on  
HAIL VOL

the WHAM. The HA icon appears on the  
display. Press the PTT switch on the  
microphone, hold the microphone

approximately two inches away from your mouth, and speak clearly in a  
normal voice. To cancel Hail mode, press and hold MENU/HAIL for  
more than 2 seconds on the WHAM.  
Hail Volume adjust  
While the POLARIS is in the Hail mode, you  
can adjust the out going volume by pressing  
the L/M keys on the WHAM.  
Low Battery Alert  
When the battery pack (or batteries) are  
very low and need to be charged (or  
changed), the following screen appears.  
Battery Low  
Complete the conversation as quickly as  
possible and return the handset to the  
charger unit for charging (or replace the  
batteries).  
Backlight Adjust  
You can adjust the backlight in 3 stages by pressing LIGHT/LOCK  
continuously (LOMIDHI). When you push any key (except PTT),  
the backlight turns On for 5 seconds.  
Key Lock On/Off  
You can turn the Key Lock On by pressing and holding LIGHT/LOCK  
when the Key Lock is Off. When it is set to On, "--" appears.  
If you want to turn the Key Lock Off, you can press and hold  
LIGHT/LOCK for 2 seconds.  
TRI HI CAN  
Note:  
Key Lock is invalid while the WX  
ALERT is sounding or WX  
ALERT CH is receiving.

Distress  
Note:  
You must set the user MMSI in order to send a Distress call.  
Please see the POLARIS Owners Manual on page 40 to set  
the MMSI.  
This feature will allow you to transmit a Distress call.

In order to transmit a Distress call,  
press and hold DISTRESS for  
5 seconds. Then, the following  
screen appears and select SEND  
or CANCEL. If you select

sound. The name will be displayed if it is the name registered

Latitude, longitude, and time information will also be displayed  
only on the POLARIS, if the GPS module is carried in the  
vessel that transmitted a DSC Distress call.

If the WHAM does not perform to your expectations, try the suggestions  
listed below, If you cannot get satisfactory results, call Uniden Technical  
Support at (800) 586-0409, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Central Standard  
Time, Monday through Friday.
