S Avoid dangerous environments. Do not
use in unventilated areas or where dust or
explosive vapors can build up.
DOUBLE INSULATION
CONSTRUCTION
Your powerhead should be double insulated to
help protect against electric shock. Double in-
sulation construction consists of two separate
“layers” of electrical insulation instead of
grounding. Tools and appliances built with a
double insulation system are not intended to be
grounded. Safety precautions must be ob-
served when operating any electrical tool. The
double insulation system only provides added
protection against injury resulting from an inter-
nal electrical insulation failure.
S To reduce the risk of electrical shock, use
extension cords specifically marked as
suitable for outdoor appliances. The elec-
trical ratingofthe cordmust notbe less than
the rating of the unit. The cord must be
marked with the suffix “W-A” (in Canada,
“W”). Make sure your extension cord is in
good condition. Inspect extension cord be-
fore use and replace if damaged. An under-
sized extension cord will cause a drop in
line voltage resulting in loss of power and
overheating. If in doubt, use the nextheavi-
er gauge. The smaller the gauge number,
the heavier the cord.
WARNING: All repairs to an electric
powerhead, including housing, switch, motor,
etc., must be diagnosed and repaired by quali-
fied service personnel. Replacement parts for a
double insulated appliance must be identical to
the parts they replace. A double insulated
appliance is marked with the words “double in-
sulation” or “double insulated”. The symbol
(square within a square) may also be marked on
the appliance. Failure to have the unit repaired
by your authorized service dealer can cause the
double insulation construction to become inef-
fective and result in serious injury.
S Do not use multiple cords.
S The powerhead may have a polarized plug
(one blade is wider than the other); if so, it
will require the use of a polarized extension
cord. The appliance plug will fit into a polar-
ized extension cord only one way. If the
plug does not fit fully into the extension
cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does
not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension
cord. A polarized extension cord will re-
quire the use of a polarized wall outlet. This
plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet only
oneway. Ifplugdoesnotfit fully into thewall
outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit,
contact a qualified electrician to install the
properwall outlet. Donotchangetheequip-
ment plug, extension cord receptacle, or
extension cord plug in any way.
UNIT/MAINTENANCESAFETY
WARNING: Disconnect powerhead
spark plug (or disconnect powerhead from
power source) before performing mainte-
nance.
S Inspect entire unit before each use. Re-
place damagedparts. Check for fuel leaks.
Make sure all fasteners are in place andse-
curely fastened.
S Maintain unit according to recommended
procedures.
S Have all maintenance and service not ex-
plained in this manual performed by an au-
thorized service center.
S Throw away tines that are bent, warped,
cracked, broken, or damaged in any other
way. Replace parts that are cracked,
chipped, or damaged before using the unit.
S Use only recommended Poulan PRO!
parts and accessories. Never use wire,
wire rope, string, flailing devices, etc.
S Be sure tines stop turning when engine
idles (see CARBURETOR ADJUST-
MENTS section of powerhead manual).
S Removethetines beforemaking carburetor
adjustments. Hold the unit by hand.
S Keep others away when making carburetor
adjustments.
S Do notattemptto repair unit. Inspect the in-
sulation and connectors on the powerhead
and extension cord before each use. If
there is any damage, do not use until dam-
age is repaired by your authorized service
center.
S Do notpull or carry by cord; do not use cord
as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull
cord around sharp edges or corners. Keep
cord away from heated surfaces. Do not
unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp
the plug, not the cord.
S Do not use the powerhead if the switch
does not turn the unit on and off properly.
Have the unit repaired by your authorized
service center.
S Keep the extension cord clear of operator
and obstacles at all times. Do not expose
cords to heat, oil, water, or sharp edges.
S Avoid any body contact with any grounded
conductor, such as metal fences, or pipes,
to avoid the possibility of electric shock.
Don’t handle plug or unit with wet hands.
S Do not use with damaged cord or plug. If
powerhead is not working as it should, has
been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or
dropped into water, return it to your autho-
rized service center for repair.
S Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
protection should be provided on the circuit
or outlet to be used for the powerhead. Re-
ceptacles are available having built-in
GFCI protection and may be used for this
measure of safety.
S Never start the unit with the clutch housing
removed. The clutch can fly off and cause
serious injury.
S Avoid heavy contact with solid objects that
might stop the tines. If heavy contact oc-
curs, stop the unit and inspect for damage.
S If tines strike a foreign object, follow these
steps: stop unit and disconnect spark plug
wire (or disconnect from power source), in-
spect for damage, and repair any damage
before resuming operation of the unit.

S Never douse or squirt the attachment with
water or any other liquid. Cleanunit andde-
cals with a damp sponge (see STORAGE).
If situations occur which are not covered in
this manual, use care and good judgment. If
you need assistance, call 1-800-554-6723.
SPECIAL NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-
tions through prolongeduse of gasoline pow-
ered hand tools could cause blood vessel or
nerve damage in the fingers, hands, and
joints of people prone to circulation disorders
or abnormal swellings. Prolonged use in cold
weatherhas beenlinked toblood vessel dam-
age in otherwise healthy people. If symptoms
occur such as numbness, pain, loss of
strength, change in skin color or texture, or
loss of feeling in the fingers, hands, or joints,
discontinue the use of this tool and seek med-
ical attention. An anti-vibration system does
not guarantee the avoidance of these prob-
lems. Users who operate power tools on a
continual and regular basis must monitor
closely their physical condition and the condi-
tion of this unit.
CULTIVATING SAFETY
WARNING: Inspect the area to be cul-
tivated before each use. Remove objects
(rocks, vines, branches, broken glass, nails,
wire, string, etc.) which can be thrown by the
tines or can wrap around the shaft.
S Hold the unit firmly with both hands.
S Keepfirm footingandbalance. Do notover-
reach or stand on unstable surfaces.
S Look behind and use care when backing
up.
S Keep all parts of your body away from the
tines and muffler.
S Do not force the unit. Use only for jobs ex-
plainedinthis manual. Useonly forcultivat-
ing. Do not abuse unit. Do not use in rainor
wet locations.
