About USB 2.0
USB 2.0 has a maximum interface transfer rate, or bandwidth, of 480 Mbps
(Megabits per second). The performance depends on many factors including:
CPU, file system overhead, number of attached USB devices and more. Given
these and other factors, in day-to-day use you can expect maximum,
sustained transfer rates around 25 MB/s (Megabytes per second). USB 2.0 is
backwards compatible with USB 1.1. This means you can connect a USB 2.0
device to USB 1.1 port, and vice versa. However, interface transfer rates are
limited by the interface with the lower speed. If you plug the SoloPRO into a
USB 1.1 port on your computer, data transfer rates will be limited to USB 1.1
speeds (up to 12 Mbps).
11

About eSATA
eSATA, or external SATA, is a high performance interface that provides up to
6x faster transfer rates than USB 2.0 (up to 3 Gbits/sec). It was developed to
extend the internal SATA interface to external devices. eSATA supports hot-
swapping by design, however, this feature requires proper support and setup
at the host, device (drive), and operating-system level. Connecting the
SoloPRO through eSata is recommended for best drive performance and OS
compatibility.
NOTE: The cable supplied with your system has been optimized for
performance. Longer cables may not work or only work intermittantly.

Securing the SoloPRO (Suggestions)
Kensington® Security Slot
For drive security, the SoloPRO is equipped with a Kensington security slot,
which supports a standard Kensington security cable (sold separately). For
more information on the Kensington security slot and available products, visit
Kensington® Security
Slot
13

For Added Security
For added security, the SoloPRO can be secured with a cable and padlock or
bolted to a floor. See the pictures below for suggested methods on physically
securing the SoloPRO.
14

Connecting the SoloPRO to Your Computer
Using the USB connection
1.
Connect the included power supply to the back of the SoloPRO.
CAUTION! To avoid damage to the power supply connector, make sure
it is aligned correctly before plugging it into the drive. Do not move
the drive while it is powered up to avoid drive damage or data loss.
a)
Plug in the AC cord in the power supply.
b)
Plug the small end of the power supply into the Solo’s power
port.
c)
Plug the AC cord into an AC outlet.
2.
3.
Connect the USB Cable. The USB cable has a flat connection on one
end, and a square connection on the other end. The flat connection
plugs into your computer. The square connection plugs into the
SoloPRO. Be sure to correctly insert the connectors or you may
damage the SoloPRO’s hard disk drive and void the warranty.
Turn on the power switch on the back of the SoloPRO
15

4.
Verify that the Drive Mounts. Before storing data on the SoloPRO, the
drive must be “mounted” to the computers operating system.
This means that the computers operating system has recognized at
least one readable partition on the drive and established a
communication link with it.
For Windows PC, once the SoloPRO is powered on the operating system
should mount the drive in a few moments. A new drive icon/letter will
appear in My Computer/Windows Explorer. You are now ready to use
the Solo.
For Mac, once the SoloPRO is powered on the operating system should
mount the drive in a few moments. A new drive icon will appear on the
Desktop and in the Finder. The SoloPRO should be reformatted for the
Mac OS (See page 21 - Formatting the SoloPRO for Mac OS)
5.
The SoloPRO is ready to use. Save or drag and drop files to the drive as
you would to any other drive attached to your computer.
6.
Any commercially available backup software should work with the
SoloPRO. See our website for suggestions.
16

eSATA Connection
For best performance and compatibility with Windows Server and Linux,
connect the drive to an eSATA host adapter or a built-in external eSATA
connection. Connect the drive to USB if a supported eSATA connection is not
available.
1.
Verify eSATA drivers are properly installed.
NOTE: You do not need to install special drivers for the SoloPRO hard
drive. It is supported by the drivers included with the eSATA host
adapter or built-in eSATA connection.
2.
Shut down the computer.
NOTE: Your eSATA interface may NOT be hot plug compatible. Shutting
down the computer before connecting, powering-on or disconnecting
the drive will make sure the SoloPRO mounts properly on your
computer.
17

3.
Connect the included power supply to the SoloPRO.

Plug the AC cord into an AC outlet.
4.
5.
Connect the eSATA cable from the PC to the SoloPRO.
NOTE: Never connect the drive to the computer with more than one
cable.
a)
b)
Identify the eSATA cable and connect it to the back of the drive.
Connect the other end of the cable to your eSATA host adapter or
built-in eSATA connection.
Turn on the power switch on the back of the SoloPRO and power-on
your computer.
18

6.
Verify that the Drive Mounts. Before storing data on the SoloPRO, the
drive must be “mounted” to the computers operating system. This
means that the computers operating system has recognized at least
one readable partition on the drive and established a communication
link with it.
For Windows, once the OS boots, a new drive icon/letter will appear in My
Computer/Windows Explorer. You are now ready to use the SoloPRO.
For Mac, once the OS boots, a new drive icon will appear on the Desktop
and in the Finder. The SoloPRO should be reformatted for the Mac OS
(See page 21 - Formatting the SoloPRO for Mac OS)
For Linux, the drive must be manually mounted after the OS boots. The
SoloPRO should be re-formatted for the Linux OS. Contact your Linux
System Administrator for assistance with these steps.
7.
8.
The SoloPRO is ready to use. Save or drag and drop files to the drive as
you would to any other drive attached to your computer.
Any commercially available backup software should work with the
SoloPRO. See our website for suggestions.
19

Disconnecting and Reconnecting the Drive using eSATA
eSATA supports hot-swapping by design, however, this feature requires
proper support and setup at the host, device (drive), and operating-system
level. If not properly configured you may have to power off your computer and
the SoloPRO before disconnecting.
CAUTION! To avoid data loss, make sure you shut down your computer before
turning off power to the drive. Do not move or disconnect the drive while it is
powered up.
The system should recognize the drive if it is reconnected and powered up
prior to powering up the host computer. If the drive is not recognized, restart
the computer. Always make sure the drive is placed on a stable surface before
reconnecting to the computer or turning on power to the drive.

ioSafe Data Recovery Service
Terms and Conditions
As applicable during the Data Recovery Service period and upon validated
registration of an ioSafe (the Company) product on the Company's website
original purchaser for one "data recovery event". The Company will attempt to
restore the lost data by employing one of the following ways:
The Company or its contracted partner will provide phone or email based

The Company may pay for the disaster exposed product to be shipped back to
the Company's headquarters for data recovery. If data recovery is successful, a
replacement product will be loaded with the original data and shipped back to
the original user, or
At the discretion of the Company, if the data recovery by the Company is not
successful, the Company will pay up to $2,500 USD to a third-party data
recovery service of the Company's choice to extract the data. Any data
extracted will be loaded on a replacement product and shipped back to the
original user. The Company has the right to use a factory refurbished product
as the replacement product.
22

The Company's good faith attempts to restore and recover the data in
accordance with these terms and conditions shall be the purchaser's sole and
exclusive remedy and the Company shall not be liable for any damages
whatsoever. The Company cannot guarantee that any data will be recoverable
nor can it guarantee which data files are on the product. Data restoration or
recovery shall be strictly limited to whatever files are restorable or recoverable
and not what the purchaser believes to exist on the product. Only one instance
of a "data recovery event" per product is covered by this program for products
registered to the original purchaser only.
23
